The Jewish Community Council of Gateshead is the trusted community anchor organisation and representative body for the Orthodox Jewish community in Gateshead.
We support the local community
We advocate for
its needs
We provide it with
opportunity
Located in the densely populated urban core of central Gateshead, an area of deprivation and disadvantage, the Jewish community’s cultural and religious barriers often result in social inequity in the forms of economic and health inequalities and digital exclusion. As a BAME community, these barriers increase disadvantage, resulting in inhibited life chances.
Through ongoing dialogue with the Local Authority, local and regional NHS health bodies, voluntary sector support organisations and the police, we play a key role in fostering the growth and empowerment of people and organisations within the community.
By forming effective local and regional partnerships we aim to remove barriers and work together more effectively, thereby solving local issues and improving the social, economic and health & wellbeing prospects of the Orthodox Jewish community in Gateshead.
Some of our wide-ranging initiatives that carry the community forward and upward every day.
There is opportunity for support available for organisations and individuals within the community — who are often overlooked or difficult to access.
We create user-led programmes to help the community access support in a culturally appropriate way, reducing isolation and ensuring the many local charities and families don’t miss out.
The Jewish community is ‘hard to reach’, creating barriers to access for the wider community. We serve as the community’s voice and public liaison, acting as a single point of contact and enabling more effective partnership working with external agencies.
We aim to raise aspiration and improve life chances by providing services in a culturally appropriate way, and work with external agencies to do the same.
This enables and encourages equitable access for the community and increases confidence, effecting lasting social change and giving families a foundation for the future.
“Gateshead Council has a long-standing and much valued relationship with the JCCG. They make a great difference to the way the Council, it’s partners and other organisations outside the community can better connect and provide culturally appropriate services, and in turn help the different Jewish institutions and residents connect with the wider community. Without doubt, the JCCG has made a significant impact on the quality of life experienced by Gateshead’s Jewish community.”
“Our staff deal with the Jewish community day in, day out, so we wanted to educate them to make sure they were in line with the Jewish culture and values – and that we wouldn't make anyone uncomfortable during our encounters. Their cultural awareness workshop is an end-to-end coverage about everything you need to know, from food to festivals. The presenters were so personable, the content was delivered in such an open way and that open dialogue has created a sense of community. We highly recommend it.”
